Becoming a Combat Pro in Final Fantasy XVI: 10 Useful Tips

Final Fantasy XVI is here and I’ve had a great time playing it. I’d rate it 8.5 out of 10. One of the standout features for me during my 65+ hours of gameplay was the combat system. It’s fast, action-packed, and gets more complicated as you progress through the story. But I understand that combat can be tricky, so I’m here to share some easy-to-follow tips and tricks to help you succeed in FFXVI.

Make the Most of Timely Accessories

Let’s start with a cool feature: Timely Accessories. Don’t overlook these helpful tools; they’re there for a reason. You can equip up to three of them right from the start whether you’re in Story-Focused Mode or Action-Focused Mode (in Story-Focused Mode, they’re equipped automatically).

Here’s what each Timely Accessory does:

  • Ring of Timely Evasion: Clive dodges most enemy attacks automatically when wearing this.
  • Ring of Timely Strikes: Execute advanced combos easily – just hit Square and Clive does the rest.
  • Ring of Timely Assistance: Clive’s loyal sidekick, Torgal, fights and heals on his own during battles.
  • Ring of Timely Focus: When Clive gets hit, time slows down which makes it easier for you to dodge by pressing R1.
  • Ring of Timely Healing: Clive heals himself when his health gets low.

Practice in the Hall of Virtue

If certain enemies are giving you a hard time, head to the Arete Stone in your Hideaway hub and visit the Hall of Virtue. There, you can choose any enemy you’ve encountered in the game and practice fighting it. The Hall of Virtue has different options to help you learn, like showing when to use a Magic Burst in your combo. You can even adjust the enemy’s behavior to make it easier to practice.

Try Out Different Eikon Builds

Clive gets new Eikons each with its special ability (activated with Circle) and two more Eikonic abilities (activated with R2 + Square or R2 + Triangle). You need to experiment with these abilities to see how they work together. You can unlock more Eikonic abilities with Ability Points which lets you customize your combat style even more. Test different combinations to find your favorite – mine is Phoenix, Garuda, and Bahamut.

Master Your Favorite Eikonic Abilities

When you unlock an Eikonic ability, you can make it even better by spending more Ability Points. Once you’ve maxed it out, you can “Master” it. This not only makes it stronger but also lets you use it with different Eikons. It gives you more flexibility in combat.

Use Limit Break Wisely

Sometimes, potions and elixirs won’t be enough to keep Clive alive in a tough battle. That’s when you can use Clive’s Limit Break ability, unlocked during a specific story mission. Press L3 + R3 and Clive goes into Limit Break mode. He becomes much stronger and faster and he heals based on the damage he deals with. Save this ability for the right moments to turn the tide in a tough fight.

Get Good at Precision Dodging

Parrying can be tricky with the game’s fast pace, but precision dodging is more doable. Right before an enemy’s attack lands, hit R1, and Clive will dodge away. If you time it right, you’ll see “Precision Dodge” on the screen, and the enemy will be open for a counterattack. Press Square immediately after the precision dodge for a powerful counter. Practice this because it’ll save you in tight spots.

Choose Accessories that Suit You

You’ll find various accessories on your journey, each offering different bonuses. Pick the ones that match your playstyle and enhance your combat strategy. Some accessories reduce cooldown times for specific Eikonic abilities while others boost attack damage. Select those that fit your approach, whether you like combos or powerful abilities.

Love Garuda as Your Go-To Eikon

Among the Eikons available, Garuda is a fan favorite. Her Circle ability is super useful against bigger enemies with stagger bars. When you use it, Clive pulls the enemy toward him, extending the time they’re staggered. Master this move against staggered enemies for massive damage.

Remember, mastering FFXVI’s combat takes practice, so don’t get discouraged if you don’t nail it right away. Keep these tips in mind and enjoy your journey in Final Fantasy XVI!
